What is Coolant

The primary purpose of the coolant is to prevent the engine from overheating. It does this by transporting the engine heat, which is generated mainly within the cylinder head combustion chamber, to the radiator, where it is cooled. Therefore the coolant must have good heat transfer characteristics and high boiling point.

Which coolant are used in volvo automobile

It must be able to withstand low temperature - well below freezing point. To provide good antifreeze protection the Volvo coolants contain ethylene glycol. The coolant also has a lubricating role, e.g. in the coolant pump.

As the coolant comes into contact with several types of material in the engine, under hot conditions, the Volvo coolants have been thoroughly tested and evaluated. Specifically selected protective chemicals, inhibitors, provide corrosion protection on metals and prevent seals from swelling or cracking. Insufficient protection can lead to water leakage, deposit formation, water pump damage and, in worst case, engine malfunction.

Note: Volvo coolant and VCS coolant must not be mixed with each other or with other coolants. Mixing coolants impair the protection against corrosion that can cause damage to the engine.

Diesel particulate filter-DPF

Diesel particulate filter(DPF) greatly reduces the emission of soot particles, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. This system automatically burns away the soot particles trapped in the filter.
